MUSTANG SURVIVAL
A PART OF OUT 21st CENTURY HERITAGE
The responsibility for care of the mustangs now lies in the hands of the United States government through the Bureau of Land Management. The free-ranging mustangs need to be managed to maintain balance in the competition for forage utilized by mustangs, other wildlife, and domestic livestock. Sadly, the BLM has limited resources for this task and has resorted to making drastic herd cuts on the range. Regrettably, many of the mustangs that have been culled from the open range have ended up in long-term holding facilities.
These icons of the American West deserve better treatment.
FOAL - Friends Of A Legacy
was started in 2005 by concerned Cody Wyoming area residents after the BLM round up of around 400 of the 500 McCullough Peaks mustangs in 2004.
GOALS
1) Create ongoing education opportunities. FOAL has purchased property adjacent to the
McCullough Peaks Herd Management Area (HMA) on US Highway #14-16-20 between Cody and Greybull, Wyoming on which it will establish an education center. The education facilities will include an interpretive center describing herd management practices, wild horse behavior, herd dynamics, range management practices, and local wildlife and habitat.
The education center will also include a history section, dealing with the origins of the modern horse and history of the McCullough Peaks herd. Internet connections and a continually evolving website will be integrated into the communications section of the education center.
A horse training area will be a part of the complex. It will serve as a training center for horse owners and potential horse owners who want to learn humane training techniques, thereby preventing cruelty to animals. The entire FOAL education center, with the exception of the horse training area when training is in progress, will be open to the public from May through September. Education events will also take place throughout the year for such groups as 4H Clubs, FFA Chapters from high schools, equine classes from colleges and universities, and classes from schools on Indian reservations. The Internet connection, email, and website will be attended to throughout the year, although the physical location may be transferred to an office in Cody during the winter months.
